Plant secondary metabolites: a review

Plants are important source for the discovery of new products of medicinal value for drug development and plants secondary metabolites are unique sources for pharmaceuticals food additives, flavors and others industrial values. Commercial importance of these secondary metabolites has resulted in a great interest in its production and in exploring possibilities of enhancing its production by means of tissue culture technology in the recent years. Plants cell culture technologies were introduced at the end of 1960 ‘ s as a possible tool for both studying and producing plant secondary metabolites. The focus of the present review is the application of tissue culture technology for the production of some others important plant secondary metabolites. The present communication deals the brief introduction, classification, recent improvements of production, anti microbial properties and importance of plant secondary metabolites.
